What?
White balance is responsible for keeping your photos the correct temperature. A low colour temperature creates more red, a higher colour temperature more blue. Digital cameras create the correct colour temperature by picking the part of the photo that it thinks should be white and filtering the light to make that area white. — Ray Davis

Memory Card Tips – John Watson (Photodoto)

I don’t know if this has ever happened to you but one of the worst feelings in the world (photography-wise at least!) is discovering that your memory card has become corrupted and you’ve now lost all the photos you recently took. It happened to me on my old point and shoot card but I was really lucky in that there were only about five or six photos on the card and they weren’t particularly important to me.

It can, however, be a disaster to lose your photos before you can remove them from the card. While you can’t prevent all problems, here are some memory card tips to avoid as many issues as possible. — Sherry Osborne

TOKINA lenses – the brand name for optical giant Hoya’s interchangeable range – have always been renowned for their tank-like build quality and resistance to plastic trends. They compare so well with Nikon’s own lenses it is hard to tell the difference by feel, and the current design also matches Nikon more than it does Canon.

The latest news is that Tokina is to introduce the 11-16mm ƒ2.8 in Sony Alpha mount. Tokina stopped making Minolta mount lenses shortly before their parent company Hoya acquired Pentax. The Tokina factory has been producing Pentax lenses (not all of them) and also the Schneider-Kreuznach branded range for the Samsung GX Pentax clone DSLR system. — Photoclub Alpha

New Growth in Online Photo Books and Photo Gifts Are Recognized From Sales Trends

February 6, 2010 — Online shopping or retail store shopping? The last 2 years have shown a drastic shift as more and more shoppers shift to the internet for online purchases. ABC Imaging’s MyPhotoPlus.com produces photo books and photo gifts and has gained popularity as an online service company offering a diverse product line of photo gifts for online and walk-in customers. MyPhotoPlus.com attributes its success to easy to use photo gift templates as well as the fact that so many have now adjusted to, and are comfortable with purchasing items through the internet.

A small verbal survey of 200 people ranging in ages between 18 and 45 was conducted by James Dempsey (My Photo Plus Manager) and a question was asked “Where do you shop for gifts?”, with the choices of internet, retail store or both. It seems that a combined 94% answered internet or both. James states, after brief conversations with those that participated, the conclusion was that the majority under the age of 30 have made the shift to shop online because of convenience. One 19 year old woman by the name of Danielle stated, “It’s convenient to shop online and with so little time, I enjoy the time saved by purchasing gifts over the Internet.”

A Raw converter for Mac OS X (10.4,10.5 and 10.6 only), supporting almost all available digital Raw formats made for photographers by a photographer-software engineer with unmeasurable amount of help and tutoring from my friend, professional photographer Iliah Borg. We just got fed up with those converters made by programmers for their upper management

Think of RPP as a development machine in terms of film photography – first you have to develop your roll right, then do whatever you want with it. So this is NOT a full featured photo processing package, you may need Photoshop or some other tool to apply sharpness, cropping and so on. RPP is easy to integrate with other tool though, f.e. it has Adobe Lightroom plugin and can work directly with Photoshop. See “Integration” chapter in “How to use” page. You may use RPP for these carefully chosen operations:

•4-channel white balance – this is probably the most important operation in Raw processing and it has to be applied at very early stages. RPP supports various ways of working with white balance – automatic detection, “as shot” (taken from camera), custom white balance from neutral areas and color tone adjustments on “cold – warm” scale.
•Linear and compressed exposure compensations – another very sensitive step, should use high precision math to preserve shadows and highlights and it is almost impossible to make it properly during post-processing in Photoshop. Compressed compensation allows to preserve highlights in more film-like style instead of clipping used in traditional linear exposure compensation.
•Built-in support for camera profiling with excellent free and open sourced ArgyllCMS.
•Saturation – very tricky operation, because it has to account for specifics in human’s color perception and traditionally it’s implemented with very crude methods. I’m trying to keep up with Color Science and using a lot more sophisticated approach.
•Brightness and contrast – these represent my and Iliah Borg’s attempts to create tone curve adjustments based on actual film density measurements in different development modes. Having done this, you should finally be able to obtain that dearly-looking film-like tonality in your pictures.
•Interpolation – RPP supports 3 methods at the moment. VCDMF, AHDMF and Half. Actually Half is not interpolation – this is a half resolution recombination when four single-colored pixels (RGBG) combined to one RGB, very fast, color accurate, but at price of lost resolution.
•Highlights recovery – a simple tool to restore clipped channels if present (e.g. the "pink sky" problem).
•Local Contrast – a tool based on HiRaLoAm technique by Dan Margulis to give your images more contrast without heavy impact on overall tonality as with regular contrast.
•Monochrome mode – a scientific way to produce black&white, sepia and other kinds of monochrome pictures based on measurements of actual photo papers made by Iliah Borg.
•Calibrated histogram with eV, L* and Adams Zone system scales.

Less than a year after the launch of the EOS Rebel T1i (500D) comes the latest in Canon’s hugely popular consumer SLR range, the Rebel T2i (EOS 550D). With the 450D and 500D Canon appeared to be pulling away slightly from the real ‘entry level’ (a sector driven almost entirely by price), and the EOS 550D – on paper at least – is no exception, outgunning many of the ‘upper entry level’ and mid range SLRs on the market today in terms of spec. To ensure it doesn’t lose out at the price-sensitive DSLR entry point Canon is once again introducing its new flagship Rebel as a ’sister’ product to the camera it ostensibly replaces. The EOS 500D (Rebel T1i) will be staying in the range for the rest of 2010 (at, one presumes, a more attractive price point). Some reviews also mentioned less than ideal flare control, but frankly, that was nit-picking. Sometimes, Even the Best Lenses Need to Be Replaced – Dennis Hays

I’ve used cameras for most of my life, and I have really enjoyed what photography has brought me. This science and art requires attention to detail and ongoing maintenance. If you are serious about what you do, you probably spend many hours taking care of your gear. We know it’s important to keep dust off of our lenses and sensor, because any foreign matter degrades the quality of the image.

Recently, I noticed I was having some problems driving at night. Automobile headlights created a glare that made it difficult to see the road. I had also become quite light sensitive, to the point where even house lamps were difficult to look at. My night vision, which at one time was almost cat-like, now lacked contrast and detail.

As a photographer, I saw all of these changes in terms of cameras and lenses — and also from the perspective of an auto-hypochondriac.

A Feeling of Impending Doom

Yes, I suffer from “auto-hypochondria.” That is, whenever I’m driving my automobile, I tend to absently scratch or rub my neck or shoulders and find something I hadn’t felt before. Immediately, I believe it’s a death sentence.

More often or not, it’s an ingrown hair, a mosquito bite or other benign item. But there’s always a panicked minute or two when I feel impending doom.

So it shouldn’t surprise you to learn that upon realizing I had vision problems, my mind went directly to macular degeneration, retinitis pigmentosa and other sight-stealing diseases. Any one of those could mean the end of my love affair with photography.

I went to my eye doctor and shared my concerns. After an extensive series of tests, including dilation, he revealed his diagnosis: posterior subcapsular cataracts.

“Thank God!” I said with relief.

Like Sandpaper to the Lens

I was fortunate. Cataracts can be “fixed,” usually by removing the lens and replacing it with a plastic or silicon lens. So, while having cataracts is not good, it’s a darn sight better than degenerating vision, leading to blindness or worse.

The type of cataract I have is much like someone took sandpaper to the rear of my lens. Light hits that area and scatters; hence the automotive headlight glare. The cataract also reduces contrast, compresses the dynamic range and affects acuity.

My doctor told me that sometimes cataracts can be slightly yellow. Besides the light-scattering effect and reduction in night vision, I could have had the equivalent of a built-in yellow filter. This would have affected my personal “white balance” and impacted my editing and overall color judgment. In my case, however, this wasn’t a problem.

But my cataracts do affect my ability to look through the viewfinder, chimp the LCD and evaluate lighting. I have to dial down the LCD (both camera and computer), as the brightness increases glare and tires my eyes quicker.

Cataracts can manifest due to environmental conditions (chemical, ultraviolet or radiation), trauma, injury to the eye or even genetics. Age is also a factor. Most of us will get them, if we live long enough.

My doctor said there wasn’t any rush to replace my lenses, but that when I was ready, I would need to make an appointment with an opthamologist and have surgery.

I scheduled the appointment the next day.

Auction of Important Photographs from the Stephen White Collection at Swann Galleries

There is perhaps no greater ethos than the American Dream; the pursuit of happiness and equal opportunity for all.

On March 23, Swann Auction Galleries captures the hope, inspiration and innovation of this dream in stunning images from Alfred Stiegletz, Kit Carson and Lewis W. Hine, among others.

Part one of the day’s sale features Important Photographs from the Stephen White Collection, including iconic images that were featured in the highly praised “The Photograph and the American Dream, 1840-1940” exhibit at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.

One of the many highlights includes renowned American photographer Alfred Stiegletz’ Going Home by Ferry (estimate: $50,000 to $75,000). A crowded boat, set to the backdrop of an awesome cityscape and plumes of smoke, captures in one tiny photograph, the harshness and complexity of living in New York City in 1902.

George B. Billings Displayed upon the American Flag (estimate: $1500 to $2000), by an unidentified artist, shows the infant Billings enveloped in an American flag, depicting the hope and possibility offered to every child in America.

Other noteworthy pieces include Andrew Russell’s Golden Spike (estimate: $30,000 to $45,000), Lewis W. Hine’s Spinner, Cotton Mill (estimate: $12,000 to $18,000), Walker Evans’ Country Store (estimate: $15,000 to $25,000), Andrew J. Russell’s Golden Spike Ceremony with Flag and Camera, (estimate: $20,000 to $30,000) and Commanding half-plate daguerreotype of Henry Clay, the "Great Compromiser" (estimate: $20,000 to $30,000).

The Fine Photographs portion of the sale includes photography favorites such as Margaret Anne and Lilian Brodie by Lewis Carroll (estimate: $10,000 to $15,000), which depicts the daughters of an Oxford professor.

Another important lot is Alexander Gardner’s Lone Horn, Pipe, Grass and Young Elk, (estimate: $10,000 to $15,000). As the official photographer of the Fort Laramie Treaty proceedings in 1868, Gardner documented the government’s failed attempt to develop the Bozeman Trail in a series of important images.

The medium resolution 70mm LCD doubles as the camera status screen. The body is small and construction is good with no squeaks from the plastic casing. For the most part, the specs on the prints are exactly the same as the previous show, but we have repeated the details here for the sake of completeness.
