Ricoh Caplio R4 Digital Camera
Verdict: The Ricoh Caplio R4 houses a class leading lens with a sophisticated feature set that not only works but works very well indeed. Despite a couple of niggles the benefits easily outweigh them. True versatility, excellent optics and a wide range of shooting/image capture controls at a reasonable price should ensure that the R4 is very near the top of your list if you’re thinking of buying a digital compact any time soon.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H5 Digital Camera
Like the preceding Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H1, the Sony DSC-H5 offers optical image stabilization with a very long zoom lens. The Sony H5 provides more manual exposure control than many other long zoom digital cameras, yet is easy to use in full-auto mode, and its seven pre-programmed scene modes help with tricky subjects. The design and layout of the H5 is very user-friendly, and the camera boasts accurate EVF and LCD displays. Occasionally modes can get confusing to those more familiar with Sony’s other point-and-shoot models, but a brief look at the manual will quickly make it all clear.
The Sony DSC-H5 is fairly fast on the draw, with faster than average shutter response, a smooth and responsive zoom, and very good shot-to-shot cycle times. Optical quality is very good, but we were disappointed with the high chromatic aberration and softness in the corners at telephoto; that’s part of the tradeoff found in a very long zoom that we think most will find acceptable. That the Sony H5 does all its tricks with two AA batteries is impressive.

Sony Cybershot DSC-H5 Digital Camera
Assessment: The Sony H5 performs well in typical conditions in terms of image quality and speed of operation. Image quality is good at ISO up to 200 with purple fringing being the biggest problem. Under artificial lighting, the automatic white balance distorts colors but this is easily corrected using custom white-balance which is quite accurate. Speed is also good except for focusing near the telephoto end of the lens.
The direct competition of this digital camera is the Canon Powershot S3 IS. Though, these cameras are both rated good, the Canon one handles better in terms of control layout and steadyness. Image quality is similar between these two models. The excellent Fuji Finepix S9000 may not be a direct competitor but its image quality is so superior it is definetely worth a look. Differences between these cameras is that the S900 features clean high-ISO capabilties instead of optical stabilization and that the 10.7X optical zoom lens of the S9000 starts at a wide-angle equivalent to 28mm.

Digimax L85 Digital Camera
Conclusion: The Samsung Digimax L85 isn’t the thinnest or most feature-packed camera available, but it offers a respectable feature set, unique design, and most importantly – good pictures. Some photos experience minor fringing and the ISO doesn’t exceed 400, but overall this point-and-shoot won’t let you down.

HP Photosmart R927 Digital Camera
HP’s Photosmart R927 offers 8 megapixels, a 3X optical zoom, and more image-manipulation functions than almost any digicam on the market. Will its creative modes unleash your inner artist?
The HP Photosmart R927 isn’t the most chic digicam on the market, but it takes very good photos and offers tons of scene modes and in-camera tweaks. Photos looked clear and vibrant overall, and its Design Gallery improves snaps before printing and provides creative controls not found elsewhere.

Fujifilm FinePix F30 Digital Camera
Conclusion: The Fujifilm FinePix F30 successfully follows the F10 with a host of improvements inside and out of the camera. The redesigned 6.3-megapixel image sensor and Real Photo Processor work together to create crisp, clean pictures without the shutter lag that lingers on many compact digital cameras. The F30’s body got a makeover to be flatter and more portable, but many of the components are still the same.
Like the F10, the new Fujifilm FinePix F30 has a 2.5-inch LCD screen. The new model has twice the resolution; with 230,000-pixels of screen resolution, the view is much finer. It also comes with a higher ISO 3200 setting – the highest offered on a consumer compact digital camera. More importantly, the F30 adds some manual functionality with its new aperture and shutter priority modes. These allow photographers a little more room to hone their shooting skills, which they can do over and over again without worrying about whether the battery will die: it lasts for an incredible 580 shots per charge.

Nikon Coolpix S6 Digital Camera
The Nikon Coolpix S6 is compact and stylish in its metallic silver or black body with chrome accents and S-curve “Wave Design.” It is one of the few digital cameras that features built-in Wi-Fi technology for transfer of images from camera to PC. It is super slim at 21mm (0.8in.) and easily slips into a jeans pocket.
Built-in Wi-Fi technology allows wireless transfer of images from your camera to your Wi-Fi enabled PC — either all the images already stored in your camera or one by one as soon as each is taken. Cable-free printing directly to a PictBridge-compatible printer (without going through a computer) is also possible using the optional PD-10 Printer Adapter.

Nikon Coolpix P3 Digital Camera
The P3 is easy to use, has a good design and control layout. It’s also stylish and has plenty of advanced modes. But, the Wi-Fi set up has issues. There’s also too much noise at ISO 400 and it doesn’t have an optical viewfinder.

Olympus FE-115 Digital Camera
Bottom line – you’ll be happy with the Olympus FE-115’s SHQ images, but frustrated by its slow shooting performance and poor low light AF performance. If most of your shooting is outdoors, the FE-115’s street price of less than $150 makes it a fairly good value, especially for children whose needs may demand nothing more than a fully automatic point-n-shoot. Please have a look at our Sample Photos to see what this inexpensive digicam is capable of.
