Curves isn’t exactly intuitive, so Adobe lately has been introducing tools to make it more accessible. As I mentioned in my “Introduction to Curves” post, the sliders available underneath the curve in Lightroom (and Camera Raw) to adjust brightness of Highlights, Lights, Darks and Shadows are one example of this. Another example is the targeted [...]

Imagine an old fence, turned into a stunning photo display! It can happen and it has been done and shared on a great blog called Brick City Love!

What is the difference between a wild and a tame wolf? – Joerg Colberg (Conscientious)
The kerfuffle over the supposedly staged prize winning picture of a wolf is yet another reminder that there is a problem, but the more I think about it, the more I am convinced that the problem arises from how we view photography, from what we expect photographs to show or do. Here are some thoughts, [...]
Thoughts on a quiet, very cold Sunday – Joerg Colberg (Conscientious)
Some time ago, I went to a talk given by Joel Sternfeld at UMass, where some of his Oxbow Archive photography was on display. I thought I’d get to be presented with some insight into that project. As it turned out, Sternfeld decided to go through all his work, including (and focusing on) some very [...]
[REVIEW:] Another Book Review: From Snap Shots to Great Shots (Canon 50D) – Jason Anderson (Canon Blogger)
One area I’ve not really tackled here on the blog is that of book reviews, primarily because I don’t see a lot of books come through that give me enough time to read them myself. One notable exception to that was a copy of Jeff Revell’s “From Snap Shots to Great Shots” book on the [...]
Tips to Better Landscapes – Jason Anderson (Canon Blogger)
The most common questions I get here on the blog center around the idea of how to take better pictures. Whether those “better pictures” are better landscapes, or portraits, wildlife or events, everyone wants suggestions on how to approach the practice of taking pictures better. Esoteric and creative considerations aside, there are some fundamental “tricks [...]
Give your portraits some space – Paul Indigo (Beyond The Obvious)
Looking through photo-enthusiast’s portrait photographs on the Internet I notice that nearly everyone goes for a very tightly framed shot with prominent head and shoulders or face.
If there is any space in the frame the photographer often gets a comment along the lines, I would have cropped the top or side or whatever. — Paul [...]
Composition Tips – Balance – Tiffany Joyce (Beyond Megapixels)
Balance is a key concept when composing a photograph. However, “balance” does not necessarily mean “centered” or “symmetrical”. A photograph can be balanced even when the subject of focus is to one side. A photograph can be off-balance even if the subjects are perfectly aligned. — Tiffany Joyce

[REVIEW:] Casio EXILIM EX-FC150 – Mike Pasini, Shawn Barnett and Stephanie Boozer (imaging resource)
The compact Casio EXILIM EX-FC150 is based around a 10.1-effective megapixel backside-illuminated CMOS image sensor and an EXILIM-branded 5x optical zoom lens with a rather tight 37mm wide-angle. The choice of a backside-illuminated sensor allows an increase in image sensitivity, and the Casio FC150 boasts a maximum of ISO 3,200 equivalent, versus ISO 1,600 in [...]
[REVIEW:] Olympus FE-4000 Review – Cliff Smith (TrustedReviews)
All of the major digital camera manufacturers have wide product ranges with cameras designed and priced to suit almost every budget and aspiration, in most cases ranging from professional digital SLRs costing as much as £5,000, down to simple budget compacts selling for under £100. As I’ve often remarked in the past, buying a camera [...]

Samsung NX10 hands on preview – Samsung NX10 first look – Damien Demolder (Amateur Photographer)
There are plenty of people that like to look down their nose at Samsung’s GX series, preferring the obvious and established brands such as Canon and Nikon. Even the Pentax cameras, the K10D and K20D – which were effectively the same as the Samsung GX10 and GX20, were picked over the Korean branded alternatives that [...]

Low On Budget? Consider A Desk Lamp + Softbox – Udi Tirosh (DIYPhotography)

[REVIEW:] Speedlight Batteries – Larry Becker
What AA batteries do you drop in your flashes? Alkaline? Heavy Duty? Nickel Cadmium rechargeable? Nickel Metal Hydride rechargeable? Lithium rechargeable?
According to my informal testing, Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMh) rechargeable batteries give me the most shots per charge. While the new Lithium rechargeables are getting good reviews on some tech blogs and supposedly have a [...]
[REVIEW:] Review: The Düsseldorf School of Photography by Stefan Gronert – Joerg Colberg (Conscientious)
To a large extent, contemporary photography looks the way it does because of two major revolutions. The first, originating in the US in the 1970s, not only made colour photography the dominant image mode, but also opened up new ways of seeing. The second, originating in Düsseldorf, Germany, very forcefully also made us see things [...]
[REVIEW:] Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ35 Digital Camera Review – Steve Morgenstern (DigitalCameraInfo)
The FZ35 scored poorly in our color accuracy tests, undoubtedly due in large part to the limited color mode selection provided. Most cameras offer a few color modes to fit different needs and situations, often including standard, portrait, landscape, and vivid options. The FZ35 has only one standard color mode. There ares a few Color [...]
[REVIEW:] DroboPro – Rod Harlan (Layers Magazine)
The DroboPro (big brother to the popular Drobo storage system) has eight drive bays that can hold 3.5″ SATA drives. Currently, 2 TB is the limit of a single drive (although 3TB is right around the corner), so a DroboPro can hold 16 TB total. Data Robotics uses a proprietary storage technology called BeyondRAID that [...]

Update - March 5th: The left eye surgery is done and with remarkable results. I am having cataract surgery on March 4th (left eye) and March 25th (right eye). I'm lucky that my insurance covers 80% of the cost. I have to pay 20%. As I get closer, there are numerous tests and appointments that will take me off line from time to time, Also, I don't know how much news I'll be able to post while recuperating. but I'll post as much as I'm able to.
