Using the Blending Sliders in Photoshop
“One of my favorite techniques for removing (i.e. make transparent) dark or light areas of an image is to use the blending sliders available inside the Layer Style dialog box within Photoshop. These blending sliders are easily overlooked in pursuit of the more commonly-used Layer Styles available in this dialog box.” — TutorialBlog

Wildlife and Animal Photography
“Taking impressive photographs of animals can be a real challenge, especially if you’re shooting in the wild. For one, you can teach a cat to climb a tree but you can’t tell a tiger, “Hey you, please go stand beside that rock, show your claws and say cheese.” This article offers some helpful tips to [...]
Canon sees first drop in profits in nine years, Nikon cuts profit forecast
“A stronger yen and slower sales of cameras and copiers has led Canon Inc. to predict its first drop in annual profit levels in nine years. Nikon Corp. has lowered its profit forecast as well, also because of the increasing value of the yen against key currencies, plus lower sales of stepper equipment.” — Rob Galbraith

Digital Photography Competition – Round Four
“October’s photo competition theme was “Lines and Circles”, a deliberately abstract theme to give your imagination a bit of exercise. It seems to have worked, because the standard of the entries has been higher than ever, with dozens of stunning photos exploring the theme from all possible angles, from the literal to the positively surreal. [...]
Color Management Tip – TWIP
“Many photographers have trouble matching the color on their screen with the color they get from their printers. But there is a fix that cost less than $20 that I would think everyone CAN afford.
Control the ambient light in your computer room.” — Scott

100 in 100: User report: $75 Flashpoint 35mm Film and Slide Scanner
“Chances are you have a big pile of slides and negatives sitting in a shoebox (or, hopefully, in an archival storage container), forlornly ignored as the digital age has grabbed you by the eyeballs. Wouldn’t it be nice to get those images digitized so you could play with them in Photoshop?” — Mason Resnick

Dealzmodo Hack: Juice Up Your Canon Digital Camera With CHDK
“Digital cameras are generally closed platforms, built and programmed under the assumption that they would never be modified. To get more features, you pay more for different firmware, even though the guts are mostly the same. Canon didn’t batten down their hatches quite enough. The result is CHDK, a full-featured OS substitute that runs from [...]
