How Much Do You Cost?
“My stepson looked at his first paycheck and asked, “Who is [tag]FICA[/tag]?” This was his first hard lesson about where the money goes — the cost of doing business. A lot of the money we pay for a service doesn’t stay with the service provider.” – Stanley Leary

Portraits with a silhouette twist
“One of the first lessons many beginning photographers learn is to avoid taking pictures of people when they’re standing in front of windows.
I’m sure you’ve seen what can happen. All that light streaming in from the window can fool your camera into thinking it doesn’t need to flash. You snap the picture and instead of [...]

Photography tip: Shooting for Photobooks
“While most of the technological [tag]advances in photography[/tag] recently have been focused on [tag]electrons[/tag] and [tag]pixels[/tag], there’s also been a lot of good news for those of you who like the feel and practicality of the [tag]printed photo[/tag]. Among the most revolutionary of these has been the advent of [tag]small-run book publishing[/tag]—you used to need [...]
Urban photography
“One of the many things that I like about the Stills group is that there is often genuine interaction between the participants. Unlike public commenting forums Stills generates a certain amount of back and forth. And this discourages incomplete or sloppy thinking. Always a good thing, what?” – photostream

Camera Test: Pentax K20D – Review
“The [tag]10.2MP Pentax K10D[/tag] was a DSLR bargain in 2007 with its nearly pro body, excellent image quality, fast AF, image stabilization, and a price of only $920 (body only) when launched. It’s still a steal at $700 (street). But if you want a camera with higher resolution, larger LCD, live view, and other enhancements, [...]
Nikon D3 Review
“Remember the 1996 sci-fi movie [tag]Independence Day[/tag]? It’s the one where [tag]Will Smith[/tag] plays a Marine captain and [tag]F-18 Hornet[/tag] pilot who gets the chance to pilot an alien spacecraft on an improbable mission to destroy the [tag]mother ship[/tag] and save the world from those nasty extraterrestrial invaders. (Hey, it won an [tag]Oscar for Special [...]

Canon EOS-1Ds Mark III – Review
“[tag]Canon’s 1Ds series of cameras[/tag] exists in a class of its own. With pixel counts well above anything else offered in a 35mm-format [tag]digital SLR[/tag], an attention to detail that addresses the needs of high-end professionals, and a price tag that’s thousands of dollars more than the nearest competition, it continues to push the limits [...]
4 Steps for Choosing Your Next Lens

For me this moment arrived about three weeks ago, when I decided that I deserve a nice photography treat my wife finally said yes, you can buy what ever you want, just stop [tag]talking about lenses[/tag] all the time.” [...]
HANDSOME PRINTS
“DPEXPERT HEARS HOWLS OF PAIN from across the Wide Brown Land: “Why do my [tag]printed photos[/tag] never look like they do on the monitor?” Indeed, it is a truth universally acknowledged that getting a satisfying print is just about the hardest part of [tag]DIY digital photography[/tag], and that is why many, if not most, snappers [...]
REVIEW—FUJIFILM FINEPIX F50fd
“The [tag]F50fd[/tag] (the fd stands for face detection, which really works and is surprisingly useful) is a 12 megapixel compact camera, using Fuji’s own [tag]Super CCD sensor[/tag] which is a bit larger than the competition. The lens has a modest 35-105mm zoom range (film equivalent). Construction is robust and attractive. There are not many user [...]
DIY – GPS Camera attachment
“This is a great how-to on building a [tag]GPS system for your DSLR camera[/tag]. The pictures are tagged with the exact GPS coordinates for later reference. Nice work!
This version eliminates the need for the expensive MC-35 and even the special 10-pin connector. I’ve opted for a quick GPS receiver and encased everything in a small [...]

Photoshop Technique: Digital Film Grain
“Film has a distinct advantage over digital when it comes to grain: it’s the only natural way to achieve it. Digital cameras are great at producing noise, but it’s just not the same as [tag]grain[/tag]. I’m in love with it — and I actually attempt to reproduce it in my [tag]digital photos[/tag] when the occasion [...]
Canon SD1100 IS Digital ELPH (IXUS 80 IS) Concise Review, February 2008, Lars Rehm
“The [tag]Canon Powershot SD1100 IS[/tag] ([tag]IXUS 80[/tag] IS in Europe) is as fresh off the Canon engineers’ drawing boards as it can get. Update - March 5th: The left eye surgery is done and with remarkable results. I am having cataract surgery on March 4th (left eye) and March 25th (right eye). I'm lucky that my insurance covers 80% of the cost. I have to pay 20%. As I get closer, there are numerous tests and appointments that will take me off line from time to time, Also, I don't know how much news I'll be able to post while recuperating. but I'll post as much as I'm able to.
